MIPIM 2011 – Keynote Address by Boris Johnson: London, capital of regeneration

Posted July 20, 2011 by in Blog | 25 comments

The Mayor of London plays a key role in running London. He sets a citywide vision of improvement, develops strategies and policies to realise the vision and provides funding and encouragement to help make it a reality. The Mayor is at the heart of changing London for the better. His work includes making it easier for people to move in and around the city, transforming open spaces into cleaner, calmer, greener places, tackling housing and health inequalities, giving young Londoners a better start in life, championing our city at home and abroad, and more. The Mayor is in charge of setting the overall vision for the capital and draws up strategies and policies to deliver the vision. He invests in and works with many different people and organisations to improve London in line with his vision. He is also the elected voice of the capital and champions London and Londoners at home and abroad. The Mayor and the London Assembly are supported by the staff of the GLA, a permanent body working for London to provide continuity in the ongoing development and delivery of strategies for London. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, Greater London Authority (UK)
Video Rating: 5 / 5

Around 400000 people have joined a march in London to oppose the coalition government’s spending cuts. In what looks like being the largest mass protest since the anti-Iraq war march in 2003, teachers, nurses, midwives, NHS, council and other public sector workers were joined by students, pensioners and direct action supporters, bringing the centre of the capital to a standstill. This is a classic example of what can happen when a population is dependent on their Government for “EVERYTHING”. The Government that gives you your goodies can take away your goodies. Doing damage to property will only make the Government tighten their grips on their people (IE: Ban protests, regulate free speech, etc) (March 26th)

Not really. I thought this argument had been dead for months. Now you’re resuscitating it. No one suggested that Social Science “should” or “could” emulate the natural sciences, in fact I was saying that very thing. My observation was in response to a “fact” that was cited to justify a conclusion. I simply pointed out that the statement that was proffered as a “fact” was merely an “opinion” based on an interpretation of a minor aspect of a sociological study. Superficial?

@Stalicone i don’t think any social scientist for about the last 60 or so (perhaps more?) years has suggested that they can, or indeed should, emulate the ‘hard’ sciences such as chemistry and engineering. Your clearly not very versed in the debates around social scientific methodology. Therefore your critique is still going to remain at the level of superficiality. Feel better now?

See, there was this big game of pocker on wallstreet, with your money. When they lost all the tokens the GOV stepped in, took what’s left of your money and bailed out the banks so they could get back to the next game. Both GOV and the banking cartel are doing this and will keep doing this untill the entire backbone (you) colapses. Then you’ll be so tired and hungry and weak you wont have the evergy to protest. Sad, tragic yet pathetic

I have recently been made redundant by my local council as a result of the cuts- a truly devastating experience for me & my family.

But apart from my own suffering, I worry about the effects on public services. I am a PR & marketing expert with many years experience, & was working for MUCH LESS than the private sector market rate (c. £150k). Now the job is going to be botched by some £30k pa trumped-up office admin types who won’t know what they’re doing. Is this any way to run Britain?

Go to 1:10 in the video to hear the “anarchist” say CLEARLY “I’m a cop, undercover!” and then be let out by the police officers. That’s your tax slave money at work paying for fake protestors to justify further domination of you. Aren’t you sick of getting fucking played yet?

  7. @Stalicone

It seems you’ve been fooled by empty partyline rhetoric. Right-wing ideology is not intrinsically anit-gay marriage, individual liberty et al; statist/authoratarian/collectivist religionist republicans are. Furthermore, individual liberty comes from the right wing ideology of Enlightenment era liberalism. Modern right-wing ideologies have simply lost their intellectual base.

  8. @ephekt420
Hahaha – Quack Quack !! I ‘m a supporter of equal rights for Homosexuals – including the right to marry, right -winger? I don’t think so! I’m a supporter of women’s right to choose…Just because I also believe in capitalism and the PROVEN benefits of allowing great people to do great things, does NOT make me a right winger – I’m also a supporter of the “individual rights” analysis of the Constitution, THAT’S what gets me labeled a “right-winger” by you “Assumers”

  9. @Stalicone

Older than I, so an old timer. I get to do that. ;)

  10. @Stalicone

I’m just calling a duck a duck. Whatever you fancy yourself, the posts you’ve made paint you as one who holds to some form of right-wing ideology, whether thats the GOP or libertarianism, I don’t really care.

  11. @ephekt420
Lastly – another assumption on your part – I’m not that old! In my 40′s but I’ve never been called an “old-timer” before!

  12. @ephekt420
Oh yeah – I have bunches of IBM too – but I also have blue chips as well – I only keep about 30% of my play money in Tech stocks – I still have US steel Stock! – Hahaha It’s now Marathon Oil and I get a very nice dividend check every quarter!

  13. @ephekt420
See what happens when you “ASSUME”? Because you just made an assumption about me that is so far off the mark, you’re not even in the right hemisphere. You immediately assume because I am a capitalist, that I MUST be a conservative, or even worse a neocon! Sorry my friend, my attitude is that ALL politicians and Bureaucrats are parasites, I despise a Bush as much as an Obama…I’m glad you did well with the Tech market – I made tons short selling ALU – back when it was just Lucent.

  14. @robinreeder1
LOL – the critique is accurate…perhaps a tad too summarized, but accurate nevertheless. Here are my references: Perry, J. & Perry E. (2009). Contemporary society: An introduction to social science, Hewitt, P., Lyons, S., Suchoki, J., Yeh, J.(2007) Conceptual integrated science. The point being, that Social Science, unlike a different discipline like, Chemistry or Engineering, CANNOT adhere to the “scientific Method” in it’s studies of Human and Social behavior. Feel better now?

  15. @Stalicone

Congrats if you’re not a moron financially; you’ve joined the ranks of literally billions of other humans. I’m so impressed. I’m actually what your generation would probably call a yuppie. I’m 30 with an MS, solid career and rental properties. I was probably flipping GOOG and hording AAPL while you were sucking down NRO articles and calling Bush detractors un-Merikan.

Of course, none of this is relevant beyond your pretense, but I figured I’d help an old timer out.

The real people to blame for the cuts are the previous Labour government who massively over spent while they were in power from 1997 to 2010. These protesters therefore should go and protest outside the Labour party conference.
