SQUATTING IN MANSIONS ON THE RISE IN LONDON 1-10-2011
As unsettling as it is for homeowners, squatting remains legal in England – as long as a break-in wasn’t involved. It’s in fact, considered a civil, not a criminal matter. Few squatting in this house wanted their faces shown. Those who did, were keen to show they weren’t the criminals the British media have so far made them out to be. Homeless charities say the rise in squatting and homelessness in general is an indictment on the failure of successive governments to build affordable homes for people. English property laws mean that owners of houses taken over by squatters must go to a county court to obtain an order to have them evicted. This home had been empty for up to six months, and was in the process of being renovated. The owner has now taken legal action against the squatters. The squatters have been ordered to appear in court on the 19th January and they may be evicted from the property within 24 hours of that hearing.
