Unfairness of social housing rents in London (12Jan11)

Posted June 26, 2011 by in Blog | 29 comments

The temporary “homeless” living in London (and other parts of the country) who live in rented housing far out of reach of the average taxpayer, are worried that the coalition government plans to cut the amount they can claim for rent, would force them into cheaper parts of London and the suburbs. Do the people not think it is out of order that people can claim £2000 a month in rent, when ordinary not wealthy taxpayers are paying that bill and could only dream of living in such properties? The cut to around £400 a week rent is still a hell of a lot of money to be able to claim. Recorded from BBC London News, 12 January 2011.

www.timesofearth.com Exactly two years from today and the world will be looking to London for the start of the Olympic Games on Friday 27 July 2012. And to mark the two years to go milestone, London 2012 organisers are calling on the UK public to start planning their games to ensure they don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime event. To celebrate the countdown, athletes and young people will today (27 July) join Organising Committee chair Seb Coe, Olympic Delivery Authority chairman John Armitt, Olympics Minister Rt Hon Hugh Robertson MP and Mayor of London Boris Johnson on the train from St Pancras International to Stratford International. The group will then take a tour of the Olympic Park and, for the first time, step inside venues to witness first hand the progress being made in construction. They will also walk across the main spectator bridge which will be the ‘front door’ to the Olympic Park in 2012, joined by 70 athletes. Later today, young athletes will join multi-Olympic medallist Michael Johnson running inside the Olympic Stadium on a specially laid track. Gold medal winning cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy, will welcome visitors to the 2012 velodrome and become the first person to cycling around the new track. Former NBA star John Amaechi will accompany young basketball players and shoot the first hoop inside the basketball arena. As London plays hosts to the high profile event, estate agents are anticipating a surge in demand for London rental properties. Home owners

  1. @kbdkbd99 A government agent goes into a school and says to the girls, “We don’t want you to get pregnant.” “Well, what happens if I do get pregnant?” they ask. “Well, you’ll get social housing for life.” “But if I don’t get pregnant?” “You won’t get it. You’ll have to sort yourself out.” “But to keep this housing, I must bring up the kid properly, right?” “No- if you fail, the child will get taken into care, and you’ll keep the housing for the rest of your life. But please, don’t get pregnant.”

  2. @kbdkbd99 Oh, thanks. Some good influences of mine include Milton Friedman- an advocate of keeping the government out of the economy, and allowing the information from ever-changing prices to give rational and accurate signals to determining the economy, and production. Labour’s Socialism could never perform this function, as prices are guessed, devoid of the continously evolving factors of supply and demand. No-one can spend a person’s money as well as the person who earned it!

  3. @Totter7 I agree with you so much.
I hit “reply” to make a comment and then you’re name came up – and I realised this is another comment of yours that is spot on. You have a way of putting things that makes alot of sense – keep up the good comments.

  4. @coltrane1966 Spot on. Government intervention distorts the information transmitted by prices and leads to a mis-allocation of resources.

  5. @shanepaulcoward What do think causes this social breakdown?

  6. @Jaoric This is why I think we should seriously reduce the size, and scope, and cost, of government. We do not need it enarly as much as we think we do, and we could give working people their money back.

  7. @shanepaulcoward There are hundreds of thousands of people living in London, of working age, who do not work at all. There are also hundreds of thousands of commuters squashed into trains each morning, coming into the city because, despite working, they cannot afford to live in London. The situation is insane.

Meanwhile the multi millionaires in Government are swanning around with multiple houses and defrauding us everyday, syphoning money out of our public funds for there own criminal pursuits. FUCK YOU GOVERNMENT. GO TO HELL.

  9. @liarpoliticians “£15k a year… to massively subsides those that get rent paid via benefits…” – you are 100% right – but the lefties will never see that – they believe in taking our hard earned money and giving it to spongers.

Any system that allows you to vote to get freebies earned by other people is corrupt.

Why did this woman have children if she can’t afford them ?

Normal working families put off having children because they cannot afford it.

She should keep her cunt shut.

  12. I earn my money from the private sector and I live in a house I pay for.

I wish to have a better property so will all the people who do not agree with the government policy please fund my move out of their own pocket. I will except cash or Direct debit. Thank you.

@liarpoliticians Most inner city social housing and their communities compromise of squalid disjointed and dysfunctional shit holes with little or no social cohesion or inclusion, full of unemployment, drug dealing and high crime rates – the same characteristics as most other social housing around the country – not exactly living the dream? If its location you are talking about, well how far away is far enough and from what or how much is too much? How exactly are you placing a value on this?

  14. The mayor is worried because he’s up for re-election…

  15. coltrane1966 on June 26, 2011 @ 2:37 pm

@liarpoliticians Also if a landlord knows that a large percentage of the price he charges will subsidised by the Government then he doesn’t have to charge his customers what the market would otherwise dictate and he can increase his price above it. The market has been perverted and a waste of resources occurs.

  16. JenniferHL3 on June 26, 2011 @ 2:51 pm

Why are they trying to make out as if there aren’t areas in london right now where drug dealing is strife and the neighbourhood is shit and that this is the case in Paris because of the housing system they have in place. A couple of people got stabbed in that french neighbourhood clearly because of housing noone has been stabbed in London lately. ¬_¬

  17. roflcopter2006 on June 26, 2011 @ 3:03 pm

Nice to see Bromley in that unaffordable housing block. I’m truly fucked if I ever wish to stop renting.

  18. liarpoliticians on June 26, 2011 @ 3:51 pm

@shanepaulcoward BUT, is is fair that those that earn £15k a year and HAVE to live in London, to massively subsidise those that get rent paid via the benefits system, and these benefit claimants live in property most people could only dream of?

  19. shanepaulcoward on June 26, 2011 @ 4:15 pm

You peasants are obviously not wanted in these areas or valued at all by the bigotry that infests every aspect of our society and government. 0:41< is a prime example. People are not valued in any way apart from in respect of their productivity. GHETTO LIVING.

  20. Meanwhile the multi millionaires in Government are swanning around with multiple houses and defrauding us everyday, syphoning money out of our public funds for there own criminal pursuits. FUCK YOU GOVERNMENT. GO TO HELL.
